Students present at ASEEES National Convention

For the fourth year in a row, Think Tank students presented at the Association for Slavic, East European and Eurasian Studies (ASEEES) Annual Convention. Eleven undergraduates from the Think Tank traveled to Philadelphia for the Convention in November 2023.

2023 Fellow Earns Fellowships for Research & Language Training

April 29, 2024

University of California, Berkeley student and Think Tank fellow, Kristie Moore, will undertake research in Kyrgyzstan this summer thanks to a Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship ( https://research.berkeley.edu/surf/). She has also won the Hamilton Lugar School Scholarship to support her study of Kyrgyz at Indiana University's summer language program. Congratulations, Kristie!

Three Think Tank Student Fellows Win Scholarships to Study Russian

Derah Carter (Howard University) and Maya Wong (Hunter College) have both been awarded Critical Language Scholarships to study Russian this summer. Additionally, Christian Milford Ortiz (University of Miami) will study Russian through the University of Texas at Austin thanks to the support of the Center for Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies. Think Tank Student Fellow Presents at NYU Symposium

Catalina Cabral-Framiñan (University of Miami) was selected to present at the NYU Jordan Center Undergraduate Research Symposium in March 2024. Her talk, titled "Oil and the City: The Absheron Peninsula and the Mexican Gulf Coast," extended from the research she did in the Think Tank with the mentorship of Dr. Christina Crawford.

Fellows present at Macalester College's Student Research Competition

April 22, 2023

Think Tank fellows Rosa Lovo (University of Richmond), Erik Gonzalez (University of Illinois at Chicago), & De'Vonte Tinsley (Virginia Tech) competed in the Macalester College event in April. Lovo presented on contemporary Russian draft dodging, Gonzalez on Khanty literature, and Tinsley on the Russian Revolution and Civil War in Latvia. Tinsley took home the first place prize in the history category. Congratulations to all participants for being selected to present at this competition and to De'Vonte for the award!

Think Tank student fellow wins award at SCSS Annual Meeting

April 4, 2023

Think Tank student fellow and Virginia Tech graduating senior De'Vonte Tinsley won the undergraduate student paper competition at the 59th annual meeting of the Southern Conference on Slavic Studies. His paper was titled "Revolution on the Daugava: Dvinsk in Revolution and Civil War, 1917-1920." The paper featured original research that De'Vonte conducted in Latvia and explored not only the role of Jewish and Latgalian populations in this story but also how Latvia's role in the conflict is complicated by contemporary nationalist historiography.

Think Tank student fellows present at Southern Conference on Slavic Studies Annual Meeting

Think Tank undergraduate fellows Raneil Smith (University of Miami) and De'Vonte Tinsley (Virginia Tech) presented at the 59th Annual SCSS Meeting in Gainesville, Florida. Raneil's presentation was titled "Root and Shoot: The Failure of Iakov Stefanovich and Imperial Officials to Alter the Peasant Monarchist Framework" and De'Vonte presented on "Revolution on the Daugava: Dvinsk in Revolution and Civil War, 1917-1920."
